Miskomprenis

video art, 2015

Miskomprenis functions as a displaced self-portrait. The protagonist attempts to express herself in three languages—Spanish, English, and Italian—while deliberate obstacles (a rope, a “double tongue,” a ball) strain her enunciation. These artifacts embody the everyday friction of the foreigner confronted with an unfamiliar language.

In the audiovisual piece, the three languages intertwine and, at times, one asserts itself over the others, displacing meaning through sound. What emerges is an attempt at adaptation to the host country, a restless communication suspended before a barrier that rarely breaks. The work highlights the difficulty of building ties with the environment and sustaining dialogue with locals, echoing the situation of so many migrants deprived of a shared biography and of a unifying language, often “lost in translation.”

The title comes from Esperanto: Miskomprenis means “misunderstood.” It does not name only the speaker; it also addresses the listener.
